IMPACT JOURNALISM | A weekly column
The news cycle has always been dominated by negative news. Part of it is inherent - you will never see a journalist addressing the camera and reporting live from a country where a war has not broken out, a city that has not been bombed, or a school that has not been shot up. Positive news is often incremental, and almost unfolds at a different timeline and attention span. But recent studies have shown that negative news content has mushroomed in the digital age, where sensationalism and clickbait are often disproportionately rewarded. As global challenges such as mass migration, the climate crisis, and inequality persist, and as technology is exponentially growing, a solutions-oriented dialogue is needed more than ever.
In November 2018, I launched a weekly, full-page column for Kathimerini that focused on impact journalism. It is in an attempt to showcase inititiatives of varying scale, nature and success that tackle persisting challenges, and to shift the conversation towards solutions.
